History. Hip Hop in the early 1980s encompassed immense amounts of disco and funk influence. Rappers like Kurtis Blow made hip hop dance music. By the mid-1980s, hip hop music was becoming popularized because of artists like Run DMC who incorporated rock music into their raps in order to appeal to different audiences.
